In this episode of What Would _____ Read?, Michelle and Laura are building a book bag for Greg Kinnear—and this time, the research sent us down some very specific rabbit holes.

Greg has talked about enjoying unusual true stories like The Art Thief, books about technology and its effect on our lives like The Shallows, the darker storytelling of Dennis Lehane, the strange speculative worlds of Philip K. Dick, and one of his favorite pastimes: fly-fishing.

So naturally, we had some ideas.

Michelle leaned into Greg's fascination with unusual people, strange crimes, technology, and—yes—fly-fishing with The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson, The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel, and The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami.

Laura followed some of those same clues in completely different directions with Easy Money by Ben McKenzie and Jacob Silverman, The Library Book by Susan Orlean, and Whalefall by Daniel Kraus.

The result is a book bag filled with museum thefts, hermits, cryptocurrency schemes, mysterious fires, predictive algorithms, complicated families...and one extremely unfortunate encounter with a sperm whale.
